What causes adrenaline to rush?

Any kind of fear that may somewhat endanger your mortality, though this could be phychological or physical fear too. So if your really scared of clowns and one comes up to you, you might have an adrenaline rush, but if your not scared of clowns and one comes up to you with a knife and says he's going to kill you, chances are your going to run and run endlessly.
